3. Biography Liu Xiaobo was born on Decemeber 28, 1955 in Changchun, Jilin (in China). He is the 2010 Noble Peace Prize winner. His parents were very intellectual and controlled most of what Liu did. He attended Jilin University and Beijing Normal University. He has many occupations including being a writer, human rights activist, and political commentator. Some of his major accomplishments are serving as President of the Independent Chinese PEN Center since 2003, being the first Chinese citizen to win a Noble Prize, and he has received many other awards besides the Noble Prize. Some of these other awards are the Foundation of France Prize (Freedom of Speech), Hong Kong Human Rights Press Award, Hermann Kestan Award, etc. On June 23, 2009 he was arrested for "inciting subversion of state power". He was tried on December 23, 2009 and sentenced to eleven years imprisonment and for two years cannot work for political rights. He is still alive today living out his sentence. Newspaper
7. Liu Xiaobo served his first sentence in 1989 for 18 months for joining demonstrating students in a hunger strike. From then on he would face obstacles to publishing and lecturing in China. Shortly before going to prison last year, where he still remains, he wrote, "Simply for expressing divergent political views and taking part in a peaceful and democratic movement, a teacher lost his podium, a writer lost the right to publish, and a public intellectual lost the chance to speak publicly." http://articles.latimes.com/2010/oct/09/world/la-fg-liu-profile-20101009/2 After his first prison sentence the Communist Party continued to chafe at his writings and he was then placed on house arrest in 1995 and and later ordered to a labor camp for reeducation. Released in 1999 he was disliked by the government. After he helped write the Charter 08, a call for multiparty elections and democratic reform, he was once again arrested.
8. the charge against him are suspicion of inciting subversion of state power. The reason for this law is so that China can keep control over it's citizens
9. Liu Xiaobo was arrested and began his eleven year sentence on December 25, 2009. He was arrested for "inciting subversion of state power". This means that he was encourging citizens of the Republic of China to undermine the goverment. He wrote a book, ran rallies, organized protests, etc. What he was trying to achieve was showing people a new, better type of government: a democracy. He wanted the people of China to rebel against the government so that their Communist country would be a democray. He won a Noble Prize for his work, but he was unsuccessful with the Republic of China because he was arrested. This "inciting subversion of state power" is a law in China for this reason exactly. No body can go against the government.
10. A quote from Thoreau's essay, "Civil Disobedience", that relates to this event is the first sentence. "I heartily accept the motto 'That government is best which governs least' and I should like to see it acted up to more rapidly and systematically." (p.370) Thoreau wanted his govenment to take a step back and let the people rule themselves. This is similar to Liu Xiaobo's case because he was trying to get rid of the Communist Government in the Republic of China. A Communist Government is a government which controls every aspect of life. Xiaobo wanted a democracy for his country and a democracy is a government where the people have a voice. This quote "That government is best which governs least" describes exactly what Xiaobo was trying to achieve and want he got arrested for. He was trying to fight against his government, so that they would govern less and his people could have a say. Thoreau also wanted people to have a say, so essential they were fighting for the same cause.
11. Liu Xiaobo served his first sentence of 18 months in 1988 because he joined student led protests in Tiananmen Square. After he got out of jail he was placed on house arrest in 1995 and was then ordered to a labor camp for reeducation. When he was released in 1999 the government disliked him. After he helped write the Charter 08 he was once again arrested. After a year of detention and a 2 hour trial peoples court in beijing sentenced Liu Xiaobo to to 11 years in prison. Xiaobo was found guilty of subversion.
12.This event impacted many people in China. It just happened in about a time span of a year, so the people it impacted then are the same people it impacts now. One person it impacts/impacted was his wife, Liu Xia. She was detained and went under house arrest. Also, she cannot have contact with Xiaobo. While she was under house arrest, the government cut her phone line and she had absolutely no contact to the outside world what so ever. While she was detained, joining her were 30 other Chinese Intellectuals who supported Xiaobo. Many other human rights activists were arrested along with Xiaobo. Many of these people he worked with and many of them just shared the same belief. Another group of people who were affected were the citizens of the Republic of China. When he was arrested many people grew weary and paniced. They saw the government take over and that made them fighted. Only time will tell what happens next for Liu Xiaobo and the Republic of China.
